Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi:
Iran views recent political overtures with skepticism due to U.S.’s disregard for human life
Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has rebuked the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump over a group chat among senior officials regarding the attack on Yemen, saying the disregard for human life is another reason Iran views Washington’s recent political proposals with great skepticism.
“People around the globe – including Americans – now see how U.S. officials look at world affairs,” Araqchi wrote on his X account, in reaction to the publication of leaked discussions of Trump’s aides, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth about the invasion of Yemen.
On Wednesday, The Atlantic published the group chat shared on the Signal messaging app about weapons packages, targets, and timing prior to American warplanes even took off to drop bombs on Yemen and was accidently texted to Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of the magazine.
“Some (people) highlight severe incompetence and, more importantly, total disregard for human like in (the U.S.) decision making”, Araqchi said.
The top diplomat further said: “As for Iran, we see perhaps another reason to take the recent political overtures with a huge grains of salt”.
He indirectly referred to Trump’s statement in February that he is willing to talk to his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian despite his hostile maximum pressure campaign on Iran.
On March 12, Trump also sent a letter to Iran via an emissary from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and said he had asked Iran that negotiations be opened into a new deal.
Iranian officials have repeatedly said that direct talks are impossible amid U.S. threats and the continued pressure.
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei reiterated that Iran will not negotiate with the United States as Tehran does not trust Washington would adhere to any contractual obligations.
