Mehdi Karoubi’s son, Hossein Karoubi:
Former protest leader Mehdi Karoubi’s house arrest lifted
Mehdi Karoubi’s son, Hossein Karoubi, says his father’s house arrest has been officially lifted after 14 years, following an order from Iran’s Judiciary chief.
Mehdi Karoubi, a prominent protest leader during post-election unrest in Iran in 2009, is no more under house arrest, his son has told IRNA.
Hossein Karoubi said that security personnel had told his father that they would remain at his father’s residence for security reasons until April 9.
He said that the Judiciary chief had told a famous political figure a few days ago that he had received a Security Council resolution to lift the elder Karoubi’s house arrest.
“My father was told that wherever he wants to go until April 9, he must inform the security personnel the day before, and from April 9 onwards, he will have no more problems and there is no need for coordination,” Hossein said.
He stressed that according to security personnel, there would be no restrictions on his father after April 9.
Post-election unrest erupted in Iran after claims of vote-rigging by two rivals of former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Mirhossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi claimed that Ahmadinejad had won the election by fraud, an allegation that was strongly dismissed by authorities as baseless.
